School Education Dept. Issues Directives for 2025-26 Academic Year; Uniforms, Textbooks on Day One

CHENNAI, May 28, 2025 – The Tamil Nadu Department of School Education has released operational guidelines for the upcoming 2025-26 academic year, which is set to commence on June 2. These directives encompass a range of pre-opening activities and ongoing educational and co-curricular measures, with a notable emphasis on the distribution of student uniforms and textbooks on the reopening day itself.

Concurrently, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has instructed district education officials to verify transportation accessibility for students, particularly in rural regions, and to ensure the punctual allocation of free educational materials across the State. Department officials in Chennai confirmed that uniforms and textbooks have already been dispatched to city schools for distribution on June 2, with most schools in other districts also having received their consignments.

As part of the preparations, schools are further mandated to undertake thorough cleaning of the premises before students arrive. The guidelines specifically direct schools to clean drinking water facilities and overhead tanks, making them ready for student use. The department has also strictly urged schools to maintain their campuses as plastic-free zones.

In addition to these logistical and infrastructural preparations, the department is also focused on student enrolment. While admissions for the 2025-26 academic year began on March 1 across Tamil Nadu, the department has requested all school managements to continue the admission process. There is a particular emphasis on achieving full enrolment in Class 1 and ensuring the retention of students progressing from Class 8 to Class 9, thereby minimizing dropouts
